Mahé Island
Mahé, the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, welcomes all visitors with its stunning natural beauty. Named after former French Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the island was originally known as the “Island of Abundance.” Its sandy beaches, fringed with palm trees under clear blue skies, create an inviting scene for travelers.
Despite its small appearance on world maps, Mahé offers a significant expanse, covering 154 km² (59 sq. miles), with dimensions of 28 km (17 miles) in length and 8 km (5 miles) in width. It is also home to Victoria, the world’s smallest capital city.
From above, Mahé showcases its lush granite mountains running from north to south, and gentle foothills extending into the sea, forming picturesque bays with turquoise waters. Over millions of years, these granite formations have eroded into soft sands that line the island’s secluded coves.
Exploring Mahé is a delight, whether on foot or by car. The island’s well-developed road network makes it easy to access its various attractions, including hiking trails through its interior forests. These forests are home to diverse flora and fauna, with freshwater springs sustaining the rich biodiversity.
Travelers can also enjoy the island’s cultural charm, from colorful Creole houses to small shops dotted along the coastline. Whether driving along coastal roads or discovering hidden bays, Mahé offers a simple yet captivating experience for visitors to enjoy.
